*Some notes on the talent*

Brandon Wolcott, aka Smirk, makes music intended to inspire both the hips and the imagination. Using a collage of found sound and original production, he draws upon his background in theatrical sound design to create sprawling sets both referential and distinct. Based in Brooklyn, he has released tracks on Wolf + Lamb and Dope Recordings, with an album coming soon on Archipel. ****** Laugh, Cry; Get Sweaty.******

1. Paul Alexander is my current music production partner and big fan of the effect of a resonator.

2. Edgar Um is to be avoided when he tells you he is moving due to large record collection size.

3. Aaron Clark owns his own nightclub in the southside.

4. I will be playing using no complete songs this event. I will be using only loops and portions of tracks, a la the speedy j molecular deejaying concept of the KREATE project last year. I will post the loop and part list to hijackpgh.com.

Stewart Walker - Buy Tickets

Press Release from listed Bookings

Berlin-based STEWART WALKER is a restless innovator. After making a splash in the late nineties on definitive labels like Force Inc. and Tresor, he’s had an inestimable impact on the development of current club sounds, yet consistently chooses the less traveled road: working as live producer in a world of DJs; injecting emotion into functional electronic dance music; quietly building a label family of unclassifiable artists on his own imprint, Persona.

After selling his guitar in 1993, Walker began assembling a synth-based hardware studio while in university in Athens, GA. Inspired by Jeff Mills’ Live at the Liquid Room he became obsessed with rhythm. A string of recordings appeared on Matrix Records in Detroit – including the 1997 single Amphetamine Sulphate – and later on Deepfried (Grand Rapids, MI) and Tektite (Austin, TX). A year later, his first European release Artificial Music for Artificial People was picked up by Cristian Vogel’s British imprint, Mosquito, and Walker hit the live circuit. Armed with only an AKAI MPC2000 sampler and a DJ mixer, he did what a DJ never could: move a club crowd with sounds shaped by his own hands. This original approach was welcomed across Europe and in Japan as well as his native US.

1999 saw Walker’s debut on Berlin’s Tresor Records with Nothing Produces Stark Imagery, followed up by the now-classic minimalist experiment, Stabiles, on Mille Plateaux. These productions proved to be seminal in the development of minimal techno.

Walker continued to release on labels such as Minus and Force Inc. until, in 2001, he set up his own imprint, Persona Records. Persona released eleven records in the US culminating in the second landmark album of Walker’s career to date: Live Extracts (2003). Live Extracts captured the sound and atmospherics of Walker’s in-club performances and was soon licensed by Tresor.

Persona restarted in 2005, this time in Berlin. Now based in Europe, Walker performed in every capital and made incursions as far afield as Australia and Russia. Soon after, he released the downtempo album Grounded in Existence and a breakbeaty techno EP, Travel Plaza. These releases showcased Walker’s increasing attention to nuance, dynamics, and melody.

Concentricity, Walker’s fourth full-length, was released in 2007.

Two-Stop Jaunt for Stewart Walker

from listed Bookings:
“Keeping true to the underground nature of electronic music, listed Bookings is excited to announce a two-stop jaunt for Persona Records label-head, Stewart Walker, which will find him playing on both coasts, in wildly different settings with one common goal: To move the masses.  Starting in Pittsburgh on May 1st and ending the following day in San Francisco, these two live gigs will showcase not only Stewart’s talents, but listed’s ability to search out the best parties in America to showcase their artists.

“It’s hard to have a conversation about the current state of techno without delving into it’s past, and in both places you will find Stewart Walker.  Wildly influenced by the early sounds of the Jeff Mills, Stewart took rhythm into his own hands and started to produce his own flavor of techno. His back catalog reads like a techno bible, with releases on such labels as Matrix Records, Tresor, M_nus, to name a few.  When “Artificial Music for Artificial People” got picked up by Christian Vogal’s Mosquito label in 1997, Stewart found himself on the live circuit, but instead of walking into a club with a record bag, he worked off a live set-up which consisted at that time of a sampler and a mixer, happier to create the music than just play it.  In 2001, he set up his own record label, Persona Records, which he later moved to Berlin in 2005, along with Stewart himself. Constantly producing, searching out new artists to fill his stable, and playing out has lead to a highly respected reputation for quality inside the industry.

“On May 1st, Stewart will be bringing his live set-up to Pittsburgh, PA, at a studio that sits atop a nearly 700 foot high cliff and overlooks the city from a wall of windows, which will serve as the backdrop for the night’s performance.  The space holds 200 people at it’s absolute maximum, creating a very intimate vibes for those in attendance. This event will be a lock-in style format where attendees must arrive by midnight and will go ‘til late.  San Francisco is next on May 2nd where Stewart will be playing for the Bay Area’s much-respected techno monthly, Kontrol at the Endup. With Kontrol’s focus on live performances, this is a perfect pairing, and a great way to end the weekend tour.

“During this quick two-stop tour, listed Bookings hopes to shed some light on the current state of techno while celebrating the underground scenes that exist throughout the States.  We hope you will be able to join us as we present Stewart Walker in two very different settings, on opposite coasts, yet united by their love of all things underground.”

*Some notes on the talent*

On Taimur:
Local: I first ran into Taimur’s set while at the wolf+lamb thanksgiving afterhours event @ the marcy in brooklyn. The set will be up on the hijack podcast soon, but it was this event that brought a lot of inspiration toward doing hijack. The production was right — turbosound in a room about 1/3 of the size of amsterdam, lightbox install, raspberries on entry — and taimur was excellent, for what i heard of a crazy 3.5 hour set. (Those ny guys go strong and long) Now, its our pleasure to bring him in.

Aaron says: For Taimur, you’ll get unrelenting, fast-paced bass lines like the new yorkers always deliver. He DESTROYS it every time I see him there.

On Caley Martin:
Local: Its fortunate that I’ve had a chance to see Caley play live, b/c otherwise the cynical side of me would be disbelieving of the crisp mixing and thoughtful programming that goes into his regular internet radio shows. The humanaut folks know what’s up with Caley, and its great that the hijack crowd will now as well.

Aaron says: We know caley for his gorgeous deep house and techno - west coast style. caley’s extensive music collection and the lengths he takes to acquire hard to find/unreleased tracks have even managed to creep out sean cusick. that should tell you something.

Last year’s Knockin’ event was such a huge success, we decided to bring it back again this year!  This time we welcome 2 of our favorite DJs from the Humanaut crew in Pittsburgh, PA.  Both Paul and Aaron have been playing for many years, and help run one of the most successful production companies in Pennsylvania.  Paul is known for his smooth mixing and deep techno sets, and Aaron is known for a nice blend of house and tech house.  Both are an extreme compliment to one another and we couldn’t be happier to have them here!
